  Cardiovascular Fellowship

Introduction:

The Albert Einstein Cardiology Fellowship program is the central cardiology training program approved under the Albert Einstein College of Medicine University Department of Internal Medicine’s accredited training programs.  Its home base is in Montefiore Medical Center (including both of Montefiore’s tertiary facilities (Montefiore and Weiler).  There are also rotations through Jacobi Medical Center, a major municipal affiliate of Albert Einstein college of Medicine. All fellows are expected to become expert clinicians, but also to participate in scholarly activities.  During the fellowship opportunities will be made available TESTING  for a limited number of highly motivated trainees to work for long block periods in laboratory or clinical research with funded investigators.  Others will participate in ongoing clinical investigations with faculty members.  Still others will write a scholarly article as part of their training.  Trainees who want to gain special expertise either in research or in a clinical subspecialty for use in their continued career will generally need to plan for additional years of study.  For those trainees who wish special research experiences, planning for that will take place during the first year of fellowship, and will require submission of a research plan, prepared with the help of the proposed preceptor.  During the first year each fellow will discuss with his/her assigned assistant program director plans for special projects and activities during the remainder of the fellowship.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine Cardiology Fellowship program is to produce exceptional cardiologists who will have careers as clinician-scientists, academic teachers or outstanding consultant cardiologists with expertise in one of the sub-specialty  disciplines of cardiology.  All fellows are expected to become expert clinicians, but also to participate in scholarly activities. For this reason, the training program includes both a rigorous core clinical training component, which provides to trainees the basics of contemporary cardiology, and also a period of flexible time which allows trainees to shape their own training (in collaboration with the Program Director) so as to best prepare for diverse careers.

Objectives and Goals

Fellows receive training and supervised experience in the evaluation and management of a wide variety of patients with acute and chronic cardiovascular conditions. They will become proficient in all aspects of cardiovascular disease including chronic coronary heart disease, congestive heart failure, arrhythmias, acute myocardial infarction and other acute ischemic syndromes, lipid disorders, hypertension, cardiomyopathy, valvular heart disease, pulmonary heart disease, peripheral vascular disease, infections and inflammatory heart disease, and adult congenital heart disease.
Fellows will develop and demonstrate competence in basic and clinical knowledge, procedural skills, clinical judgment, professionalism and interpersonal skills required as a specialist in cardiovascular diseases. At the completion of the training program, Fellows will have acquired the competency to pass the appropriate specialty boards required to practice as a specialist in the field.

At the end of the training period, Fellows will be equipped with the knowledge, skills and abilities to meet the requirements for certification in cardiovascular diseases, as determined by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. These include experience and training in ambulatory medicine, inpatient experience, and special clinical experiences and research. The Fellowship program offers considerable flexibility, and may be tailored to fit the individual needs.

This three-year program complies with all ACGME requirements, in addition to following the guidelines and recommendations of the American College of Cardiology (COCATS).
